What if there were no God argument and no Big Bang?
This is my very first post on The Thinking Atheist... My question to you all is this, What if the common arguments over religion never came up? What if the world had never heard of a God or a Big Bang theory? What else would the people find to fill the gaps of science where only mystery is present? Would there even be a creator argument? On the other hand, would science even exist as a possibility? Try to think out side of the bible and microscope and think about what the world could be.... Thanks and happy discussion!

Also, if interested visit my new blog called The Religion Talk @ nogroupthink.tumblr.com . Its still empty and we need to get it going! Invite your friends!

RE: What if there were no God argument and no Big Bang?
are fairies, trolls and leprechauns counted as gods? if not, thats what people would believe nowadays if no gods were invented.
i dont like trying to imagine what world would be like if something would have been that and this would have been something else... sounds too much of the crappiest television channel ever, JIM, its the one channel with as much of visual cathing wich makes people interested in its message, wich is that all conspiracy theories are true and all paranormal claims are true and all doomsday predictions are true(they never interview the ones who are not ''paranormal investigators'' or ''psycik specialists'').

the way they tell their message is liturerally this: ''some say that if its true, it might lead to the bottom of this conspiracy'' and ''for some, these satiric pictures of the pope are a doomsday prediction. some believe, that if its true, the end of the world might be soon''.
i dont understand how that channel is so popular...
sorry for the off topic, im just pissed off at alot of things

Correct me when I'm wrong.
Accept me or go to hell.

RE: What if there were no God argument and no Big Bang?
I may have read it wrong, so sorry if it's off-subject:

It's hard to imagine a world with no science or religious debates. It'd be great if religion was never founded, and their ridiculous theories never arose, but I don't think we could live in a world without science. We're too curious to know how things work, and since the first use of tools by homo sapiens, we've been studying and experimenting since.
The thing I believe, because I'm not 100% sure, is that religion used to be a form of science. The easy way of explaining how and why things work, and the reason religion is still around is because people didn't want to give up what they spent their whole life believing (plus the whole damnation for not believing might have something to do with it too).
I guess if there was no debating between religion and science, it would only be debating between science and science Big Grin and that's a world I'd want to live in (maybe parallel universes exist, and it can happen).

Well science vs science still exists (it is the foundation of advancement I guess). Science vs religion isn't really a debate. There is nothing to debate about. For a debate, both sides have their evidence and logic. Religion is devoid of those two things. Science doesn't consider religion anymore. It's only the religious folk who can't stop arguing with science.

RE: What if there were no God argument and no Big Bang?
To me, religion was an early attempt at science. It was bronze age societies taking in the world around them in the only way they could comprehend the forces in play. Lightning stike kills Ug? He must have angered the gods, and had nothing to do with the fact that he was standing in the middle of an open field during a thunderstorm with a piece of metal in his hands. River flooded and wiped away your house and killed your livestock? You must find a way to appease the river gods to get back in his good graces.

As science began to form and tools became sophisticated enough to allow for experiments and observations and the like, idealy religion should have faded away into a fond but distant memory. That it did not, I think, is due to more the political conditions in Europe at the time and the amount of influence and power the church had gained.

Unfortunately, people still believe in such stone age ideas. A local Pakistani farmer attributed the recent monsoon flooding of the area to the bad deeds of the people having angered Allah.

RE: What if there were no God argument and no Big Bang?
Hey, Nogroupthink.

Something else.

Religions and science are memeplexes that have evolved naturally over time. Asking what would be there if they weren't present is much like asking 'if there were no mammals and no dinosaurs, what would the dominant species' on this planet look like?' There's no way of telling. But we do know that something(s) would be there (provided the removal of those two groups didn't cause the death of all life on earth Big Grin ). Humans are social creatures. We are meme machines. We cannot function without a memeplex in place. So while it's impossible to know what they would look like, we do know one thing. They'd be there.

Peace and Love and Empathy,

Matt
