What if they had gotten it right 2000 years ago?
(I guess I'll post this here, it's kinda about Creationism and this section is underutilized anyways.)

I was just thinking. What if? What if the writers of the Bible weren't complete morons and they had left out the part about the dragons and witches and talking snakes and talking donkeys and Noah's ark and such? What if the "easy to mock" parts of the Bible weren't there and we were left with all the bigotry, sexism, and racism. I mean the book is knee slappingly ridiculous and look how successful it's been at converting people. What if the Bible DIDN'T make any outrageous claims and instead just taught the immoral parts that spawn the injustices of the world?

Would there be any hope for atheists?

Christianity would still be able to be doubted b/c of the various moral problems with the God of the Bible. He murders children, we know that is immoral. God approves of slavery, we know that's immoral. A infinite punishment (eternal hell) for a finite crime (a short lifetime of sin) is immoral.

If Christianity didn't exist at all, I think people of reason and science would still be atheists.
Scientific thinking makes you look at the world different. If Christianity didn't exist, neither would Islam. That would be nice. Smile

Then it would no longer be Christianity.
And there would quite virtually,be no reason to be an atheist.

It's the whacky faith stories that sell the religion to children and feeble minded folk like myself. Take those away and you lose your target audience of children under 12 who haven't developed abstract thinking yet to deal with the Bible's morality on an intellectual level. Having already deemed it boring sans the cool Harry Potter magic, I doubt people would have had any "Good News" to spread. We could all very well still be speaking Latin and wearing Roman Imperial Eagle's instead of Roman crosses for jewelry.

It was just a fucking apple man, we're sorry okay? Please stop the madness Laugh out load

It seems to me that's precisely what Christians are trying to remedy right now by focusing all their attention on the New Testament. "Okay, we realize the Old Testament is crazy bullshit so lets just talk about the Jesus stuff. Sure it's still out there but no where near as loony. And the stuff that is unbelievable let's call parables".

I don't think the Bible actually has that much influence on people. I think the main reason driving force are the need for:
1.) Some sort of set of rules to live by (even if they end up being different from text)
2.) Somebody invisible to "talk to".

It all rather reminds me of one of my favourite cartoons: http://www.erfworld.com/book-1-archive/?px=%2F001.jpg .
You have Titans (looking like Elvis) who created the world (which appears to be an incredibly complex game.) The cartoon occasionally refers to scripture which I speculate is actually the set of game rules. You have different interpretations of the meaning of the world: "Toolism" and "Scorism" for example.

None of the erfworld, whilst entertaining, is really relevant. But it raises the question: "Could any sufficiently complex book be the foundation for a religion even if it was never written with founding a religion in mind." I understand Dianetics was only originally intended as a "self-help book" and Scientology only applied for recognition as a religion for tax reasons. Of course it has gone onto be possibly the most transparently evil money-grabbing religion ever.

The European empires would have had different slogans, different insignia on their shields and a different group of undesirables on the rack. same derring-do, same swordplay, same rapine, pillage and torching.

If you pray to anything, you're prey to anything.

I wonder what it would have been like if the first human to point at the sun and say “Big hot thing is all powerful god” was told “sod off and stop talking out of your arse” and this whole chain of crap never kicked off?

Would the battle cry of armies have been “For shits and giggles!” as they charged across fields toward their bloody end?
Or would it be a little harder to rally support for these same battles when you know you only have one shot at life so try and stretch it out a bit?
