What if your own children became religious?
How would you react?

Depends, exactly what kind of religious?

I'd be fine with anything that wasn't extremist/super-orthodox. If that WAS the case I'd probably be somewhat dismayed, but they would have the right to choose what they believe.

If they weighed the evidence as adults and chose for themselves I would disagree, but it would be THEIR decision. I would have to respect it.

If that is the decision they made, I would merely ask them why.

I wouldn't react negatively, just with curiosity.

It's their decision to make, not my decision to force upon them.

I do my best to arm my kids with information. Showing them different sides to the argument, so it's not just one side.

But if they came to me and said they did believe, it's not like I'd disown them. I'd be more concerned they wouid disown me.

RE: What if your own children became religious?
My kids are still really young so I don't know. I plan to raise them as critical thinkers though. If you have grown grown up being taught to question everything and to seek truth in science, it seems it would be very difficult for religion to sneak in to your life. My 5 year old said to my uncle (interrupted him in the middle of saying grace at Christmas), "Uncle Stu dead people cannot come back to life, magic is not real". Haha
If; however, any of my children do become religious I would simply ask that they do not indoctrinate any possible future children, and then they keep thing open for their children to make their own choices about what is right or wrong.

RE: What if your own children became religious?
Free will (up to a point). My wife is agnostic, son (10 years) is atheist as far as I can tell. Daughter (9 years) believes in A god which she presumably has been taught in her weekly brownie group.

I generally leave them to it, not for me to force opinion although I am gradually discussing more with her about 'her god'.

They are both too young to comprehend properly these things but they will grow up in a house without pressure to believe anything, only to question and explore the limits of their imagination.

That said, if my daughter continues her belief in gods through her teens then I would be pretty pissed off to be honest. I wouldn't see it as somehow I had failed, it would just be a result of other influences. I doubt that she will cling on to these beliefs for too many years though.
