The importance was whether it was mandatory or voluntary. It appears to be voluntary, so carry on.

But I am curious as to what you hope to gain from it.
Definitely voluntary. What I hope to gain from it is being able to spend time with him in the future without this hanging over my head. Not everything we have in common is our past in the faith. I have enjoyed spending time with him and his wife during the past 5 years since I've moved back home, and I would like that to continue without any need to hide my beliefs. I still consider him to be an important person in my life. And in a weird way, he's responsible for my ultimate de-conversion, because despite his religious beliefs being just oh, so wrong, when I was in youth group, he encouraged us to question doctrine, and not blindly follow church leadership. This actually resulted in him being fired from the church because he disagreed with the Pastor, who was a downright bad person who used lies to get him fired. So I always took his (my mentor's) lessons to heart to seek the truth. Just never expected it would lead me completely away from religion altogether. Big Grin So, in a nutshell, he has asked for this discussion, and as a friend, I intend to oblige.

"If you would be a real seeker after truth, it is necessary that at least once in your life you doubt, as far as possible, all things." ~Rene Descartes.
