RE: What's the coolest thing you have seen in the sky?
When we still lived in California must have been around 2001 there was meteor shower that was amazing!

The older kid and I stayed up late counting them all. There was one every few seconds...

That was fun.

Other than that when I was kid I saw and heard the Concorde land at SFO. Smile They only did it once because the runways weren't really long enough or just barely long enough.

But as if to knock me down, reality came around
And without so much as a mere touch, cut me into little pieces

Venus, Jupiter and Mars in the early morning is pretty sweet. You can even recognize mars as red. Once I was out watching a meteor shower, and most of them were just fast white lights, but one of them was real slow and almost orange, directly overhead. It was worth staying up just for that one!

Not sure what the smaller planet which is appearing close to it is.

Mars?

I know Venus and Jupiter had a conjunction not that long ago...

Jupiter; and they are still approaching conjunction.

Watching a C-5B land is amazing ... it's going so slow you think it's going to fall out of the sky.

I've seen a couple of bolides (bright, seemingly slow-moving meteors).

I once watched the ISS with the shuttle approaching it from behind as they sailed overhead. There was a particularly clear sky and I was using good binoculars.

Another time I was watching the ISS and a satellite crossed just behind it (north to south) so I followed it when another satellite passed close by in the other direction (S to N). Yes

One morning on my way to work --- there was a ham radio operator having some fun in his downtime on the ISS.... They had a 2 meter uplink, 10 meter downlink on board.

I happened to have both a 2 meter and 10 meter radio in my car at the time.....

I heard the guy on 10 meter (FM) on my way to work - so I gave my call sign several times on the 2 meter simplex frequency......

I was on the freeway on my way to work - when he started reading back call signs he'd picked out -- one of which was mine.....

Too cool -- I just "talked" into space......

On serious note, the most amazing sight was that of the center of our Milky Way Galaxy, as seen from a completely dark sailing vessel, on a moonless night, some 700 miles offshore, and away from all light pollution. Awe inspiring!

The most recent cool thing in the sky I've seen was quite a few of these:
