It was on sand -- so we just let it burn itself out --- and they got some rough "glass" outta the deal. It burned hot enough to fuse the sand into glass...

When I was in the USN they taught us that magnesium fires are Class Delta fires, solution: jettison. They will burn through the decks and hull of the ship and just keep on going. Sand pit should work. How the fuck they get it hot enough to ignite it in the first place?

#sigh

Trying to have a discussion with (small minded) people who don't understand basic evolution.

But as if to knock me down, reality came around
And without so much as a mere touch, cut me into little pieces

Highway flares work well. Yes They also accelerate the burn rate, because the magnesium pulls oxidizers out of the flare. As far as my escapade here, thin shavings can be lit with a match. One method used by machinists to smother the fire many years ago was to pour Carbon Tetrachloride on it. There would be a bucket next to the lathe or mill for the machinist to use. Carbon Tet has been identified as a known carcinogen, so it isn't used for that anymore. Modern methods for extinguishing a magnesium fire involve metal-X extinguishers if you have them. https://www.monroeextinguisher.com/produ...inguisher/ It is sodium chloride based, so that the chemical bond is strong enough that the magnesium can't "get" the chlorine away from the sodium, which is more electropositive.

Another method is to drown the Class D metal fire in oil and then put out the Class B oil fire. Crazy, huh? That's why you jettison. Who needs ANY fire on a ship? I did the firefighting training in Boot Camp, that was all I ever wanted to see of a ship borne fire.

Um... no... I can't say that I do. Pray tell.
