What's the origin of "blonde = dumb" stereotype?
As an asian, it is hard for me to figure out & understand the cultural context of this.
Could you guys do me a favor?

Life is too important to be taken seriously.

RE: What's the origin of "blonde = dumb" stereotype?
The only thing that comes to my mind is the show 'Three's Company'... Susanne Somers played the 'dumb blonde' character pretty well. I'm sure the origins were well ahead of my time. Marilyn Monroe, maybe???

RE: What's the origin of "blonde = dumb" stereotype?
The best guess would be the "B" movies of the 1920's and 30's. In them, famous actresses such as Carole Lombard, Lucille Ball (yes blonde!), Gracie Allen and other commediennes would play sophisticated, slightly stupid women who eventually (1)weren't so stupid after all and (2) got the leading man. These farces were tremendously popular and made household names out of these leading ladies. They all went on to have very illustrious careers and proved that being blonde AND stupid was all a farce.

RE: What's the origin of "blonde = dumb" stereotype?
What my mother told me, when I was young and asked her about the blond dumb stereotype, was along these lines:
To bleach your hair blond just because it is fashion right now is a very dumb thing to do (and blond was fashion back then), because that color is gone and you will have to spend lots of money once that trend is over and another hair color is fashion because the dye won't stay forever, you have to do it again and again or cut your hair.
And on a humorous note she said, "maybe they didn't only bleach the color out but also parts of their brains.".

I found that reasonable but I don't think that it is really the origin of the stereotype

As per Vosur's link, I think it's more likely to be:-

"a blonde woman is often perceived as making little use of intelligence,
as a "woman who relied on her looks rather than on intelligence."

This is a blanket statement obviously and I refuse to acknowledge that this premise ascribes to me! Tongue

I wonder if that led to 'blondes have more fun' as a rebuttal.
