tl;dr

Emotion = Instinct

It sounds blunt and cold and whatever... But I can't dismiss the idea. I have yet to find an emotion for which this equation does not return true. Love, hate, fear, anger, wonder, awe, infatuation all of it. This also means that your dog probably does feel really sad when you leave the house.
