What we need is another Trump thread...
http://www.theatlantic.com/politics/arch...er/484232/

Came across this article and thought it might be interesting to share. I don't necessarily agree with anything he said, but it was nice to be able to get inside the head of a Trump supporter and get where he is coming from. I don't agree, but at least I get it.

What are your thoughts? Anyone think he makes any salient points?

But now I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.

OMG - tl;dr

I got bogged down by the sheer length of the article. Weeping

The idea of Trump the Blowhard as president makes me twitchy...so does the idea of Hillary as president. At this point I just want it to all go away.

I am suffering from election year burnout. I am so sick of hearing about it...and knowing that Trump and Hillary are the best the parties could come up with. Sadcryface

Quote:For context, my right wing views include:
•Lower taxes for all, and with it a reduction of various benefits.
•Reduction or an end to affirmative action in favor of a pure merit-based system.
•Support for law and order, and an intense dislike of disruptive protests.
•A temporary ban on Muslim immigration.
•In favor of "melting pot" culture instead of multiculturalism.
•Isolationist war policy and anti-NATO, in favor of improving relations with Russia.

For further context, I have left-wing views that precluded Rubio and Cruz from getting my vote:
•Pro access to birth control
•Pro universal healthcare (despite the taxes this requires, it’s the only realistic way to combat rising prices)
•Pro LGBT rights
•I favor the absolute separation of church and state. (I'm a Christian who believes very strongly that my religion should not be pushed onto public policy.)

There you go, that seems to be the crux of it.

RE: What we need is another Trump thread...
I can't address all of that, but these stuck out right away.

"This is a war over how dialogue in America will be shaped. If Hillary wins, we're going to see a further tightening of PC culture."

I don't think that this is how culture and the presidency interact. When GWB made his gagworthy laugh line on receiving a portrait of MLK Jr., "I can't wait to hang it," the culture did not suddenly switch back to using more racist phrases. When DOMA was signed, the country did not celebrate with a game of Smear the Queer.

The culture is moving... dare I say, evolving... in a way that includes refining our use of language and including more and more previously marginalized groups. I think that will continue, even if Trump gets elected.

Those changes are happening unevenly, and Trump is capitalizing on that fact.

"Having Trump in the White House would both give me more confidence to speak my own opinion and more of a shield from instantly being dismissed as a racist/xenophobe/Nazi (all three things I have been called personally)."

If people who have been less affected by inclusive cultural change are emboldened by Trump, as candidate or president, to flaunt their retrograde behavior then I believe we will have an escalation of existing cultural conflict. And, if people have called this guy all these things, I think it's more likely that there is a grain of truth to those statements than that all the people he was talking to are wholly wrong.

He looks like a cartoon character. What am I saying, he IS a cartoon character.

Oh, and you forgot the accompanying song Banana_zorro

Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors.... on Donald J. Trump:

He is deformed, crooked, old, and sere,
Ill-fac’d, worse bodied, shapeless every where;
Vicious, ungentle, foolish, blunt, unkind,
Stigmatical in making, worse in mind.

I think he is a figment of Stan Lee's imagination.
