Don't let those gnomes and their illusions get you down. They're just gnomes and illusions.

RE: What would Aliens look like?
Depending on how they "see" their surroundings, and gauge distance, they would need a minimum of two eyes, capable of focusing on at least one point.

Bipedal forms have their arms and hands free to interact with the environment and tools. Two legs allows for freedom of movement, and doesn't have the same caloric cost of extra legs.

Really, depending on the environment of their home world, they could very well be bipeds. Considering that most alien flicks seem to be invasions... you wouldn't see an floating alien balloon creature from a gas giant planet bothering to invade earth, so again, increased chance that any visiting aliens would have limbs, and live on a rocky planet like earth.

RE: What would Aliens look like?
They probably wouldn't have excess eyes, or tentacles or anything more than is necessary, since they'd also be subjected to basic evolution. So freaky spikes and shit that doesn't really do anything is less likely, excluding maybe weird traits from sexual selection... at least for creatures that are intelligent enough for space travel.

RE: What would Aliens look like?
They may have even removed themselves from the evolutionary line, having designed their own bodies for travel across great distances. They could be robotic.

If a previous species designed a robotic successor, they could be really anything.

If the previous species designed a way to BECOME the robot, then they may be nanobots, which slowly copied and replaced each "cell" in their body... making it a seamless transition without creating a disturbing mortal original vs immortal copy situation.

The images of Aliens seem to be limited by the self-centerness of man.

Grey's, Reptilians. Being the most popular among ET visitation believers. Hold very human characteristics. Even thou being bi-pedal is rather rare even among earth species. The majority of life on this planet has large variety of motion. The eye's are not always at the front of the head. Would life had evolved on a distant planet with the same results as earth? Climate, planets mass, planetary conditions would all have an effect of was may arise.

Even the god's that man has thought up look like us. Will man ever be able to get over this hurtle?

If an alien species did exist. What could be a strong contender aspect of what they would look like. Given what we know about creatures on this planet (not just humans) what would something we can predict would be expected from another planet.

The closest things we have to "aliens" are creatures like the mimic octopus, or cuttlefish. So, that could give you an idea. Or it might not. Tongue

They would look like whatever they evolved to look like on their planet.

Assuming life on an another planet exists, I suppose it would depend on which species evolved intellectually. If some insect type being evolved intellectually enough to be capable of space travel to here, then that's what we get.

On earth, it was homo sapiens. Elsewhere, it could be anything. It could even be a being that breathes underwater like a fish. We just don't know.
