What would change in the world if...
everyone woke up as atheist tomorrow?

How would it affect wars?

Would there be new social groups to replace churches and what would they do?

Anything else?

People would find new reasons for disliking the same sets of people they dislike now.

But...if every Christian who expects to be raptured up and avoid the consequences of pollution and other manmade contributions to planetary desolation realized this was a bunch of hooey, there might be some positive changes to the environment.

Churches would be repurposed as community centers.

People would turn to philosophy to justify their moral inclinations.

Science could be learned more easily without all the cognitive dissonance.

Contraception and abortion would be more generally accepted.

People would drop their prejudices against atheists.

Well guys like Seth, Richard Dawkins, etc... would probably lose a ton of money in speaking fees and book deals for a start, and this forum would probably be shut down, and the word atheist would fall out of use as it lost any real meaning.

General health would improve, most markedly for women, so a lot of people would be living longer, but the birthrate and the world population would probably start to decline.

Suicide rates might increase at least for a little while, probably with a big short term spike among the clergy, as they lose their jobs and have to face the reality of all the physical & mental damage they have caused so many people for no good reason.

There would probably be less wars, they would mostly be resource based wars, so the middle east might still continue to be a bit of a shit-show. Wars would probably be shorter and less violent as people would likely value their lives a bit more.

And if it literally happened over night then we'd have proof that we really live in a completely deterministic universe without freewill, which could have some interesting implications for the criminal justice system.

For plenty of people, the politics, wars, &c. would be the same--after all, the concept of the church isn't the primary source of the hate. It's just an extraordinarily convenient vehicle. There are plenty of hard-core--shall I say, dogmatic--atheists who embrace division and domination just as much as any Bishop of Hereford.

I agree with julep, though, that there are certainly individuals (and, I think, lots of them) for whom a lot would change. I think there are a lot of people out there making religion- and church-guided decisions who have strong critical-thinking skills but who have been trained on a massive body of wrong and absurd information.

Oh, and I do believe something else would fill the vacuum, because as I've said in a different post, people give lots of reasons for religion but ultimately, it exists because the adaptation (read: prediction)-for-survival parts of our brains want something to crunch on.

On average, everyone would lose 30 lbs, gain 2 inches of height and 10 lbs muscle mass.

IQ would go up 35 points, and penises would get three inches longer....

Oh yeah, like that's such an outrageous claim......

It's not like I'm claiming you'll live forever next door to the guy who created the universe....

Sheeeshh....

The world as a whole would be better. Sure I could go into the many reasons that may be but the end result is we as a species would be better served to serve with each other than against each other over a belief in a higher power.

I get to decide what my life looks like, not the other way around.

There are stupid atheists, so I'm pretty sure the stupid atheists would be causing the conflicts.

I would hope that most countries would realize that a little bit of socialism isn't such an evil thing. I would hope that government sponsored health care would be seen as a human right everywhere but especially in the US.

When atheists help their fellow humans they don't require those in need to listen to a bunch of proselytizing nonsense about an imaginary deity in order to get a handout or a hot meal. So I would hope that preaching would cease and desist.

Atheists hopefully wouldn't care what kind of birth control you're using and it wouldn't even be a topic in the news. Abortion also wouldn't even be a topic in the news.

I donno. I'd think that a lot of things would change.

Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors.... on Donald J. Trump:

He is deformed, crooked, old, and sere,
Ill-fac’d, worse bodied, shapeless every where;
Vicious, ungentle, foolish, blunt, unkind,
Stigmatical in making, worse in mind.

The void would be instantly filled with secular ideologies to rally behind. In short, nothing would change other than the reasons for going to war or to kill other people. We're territorial and tribal chimps. The absence of religion wouldn't change our nature.
