When Prophecy Fails
The book When Prophecy Fails: A Social and Psychological Study of a Modern Group That Predicted the Destruction of the World (1956) is a famous ethnographic study of a UFO doomsday cult. It describes how the group reacted when the world didn't come to an end. The conflicting views of prophetic certainty and failed prophecy led to one of the authors to create the concept of "Cognitive Dissonance." We often use this term to describe theists who hold conflicting viewpoints. The books is available to download for free on Scribd.

Or go the honesty route like Harold Camping and admit that you were wrong.

.... it says something that Camping is a GOOD example.

Chapter Three: Every Tuesday
Chapter Four...

I don't know if I'd call it a good example. He gave a specific date, what, like three times? It's not like he learned his lesson the first time.

But yeah, you could totally see Camping's followers do the exact same thing as the cultists in the above-mentioned book. Once the end of the world failed to come, they modified their statement to say that since they'd done such a great job spreading the good word, they were being granted an extension!

So, it's not like they really admitted they were wrong.

Good thing for Camping that he didn't live in old testament Israel.

RE: When Prophecy Fails
When I think about it, I am horrified that Christians have been waiting 2000 years for the return of Jesus and/or the rapture while Judaism continues to wait for Christ.

All that waiting Consider
