When Will Science End?
Here's a question I hope you'll find engaging and relevant to the interest of members here.

When will science end?

How long will it be until the scientists hold a press conference to announce that they've learned it all, and are thus closing up shop?

A related question might be, is the pace of knowledge development accelerating? Should we expect to learn more each century than we learned in the previous century?

If you answer that 1) knowledge development will continue for a long time and 2) probably at an ever accelerating rate....

What does that say about what we know today?

Are we yet in a position to offer meaningful theories, let alone conclusions, about the kinds of issues addressed by the debate between religion and atheism?

Does anybody on any side really have a clue what we're talking about? Or do we just love talking?

Ok, your turn, go!

Assuming dickheads don't fuck civilization in the ass, yes.

That we don't know a whole helluva lot? Is that supposed to be surprising?

See, religion isn't a science issue. Science deals with logic. We have Occam's razor as a bit of a rule of thumb that says it's not necessary to assume goblins under the bed without due cause, and that's about it. We know a lot about logic, a lot about how to test and experiment, and what constitutes reasonable, testable hypotheses. God, being an invisible tit who hides away from everyone including his followers, is not testable therefore, not in the domain of science. More in the domain of fairytales...

RE: When Will Science End?
Real answer: Never, as by the time that happens, we will be fucking dead.

Another answer: If you are like the U.S you can just hate science and eventually it will "die" out there.

The saddest aspect of life right now is that science gathers knowledge faster than society gathers wisdom. ~ Isaac Asimov

I’d say based on the OP Asimov is absolutely right.

“I am quite sure now that often, very often, in matters concerning religion and politics a man’s reasoning powers are not above the monkey’s.”~Mark Twain
“Ocean: A body of water occupying about two-thirds of a world made for man - who has no gills.”~ Ambrose Bierce

Oh c'mon, I'll bring a word pizza, enough to go around for everybody! Smile

Right, that's one very possible ending to the story, agreed. This raises an even more troubling question.

If we wind up using the fruits of science to exterminate our species, will science still have been a good idea?

Quote:That we don't know a whole helluva lot? Is that supposed to be surprising?

Given how many people on forums are sure they know the answer, it can be guessed that the idea that we don't know a whole helluva lot might be surprising to them. :-)

Quote:See, religion isn't a science issue.

Yes, but our relationship with science has become a "religious-like" issue. That is, a competing belief system also built upon very little.

Example:

The trillions spent by the medical sciences are all about saving people's lives except that um, uh....

.... nobody has the slightest clue whether we are better off alive or dead. Trillions of science dollars, all based on nothing but a particular brand of faith.

Medicine sounds like it's all about reason and science etc but to a very great degree all the technology and science etc serve just another faith based belief system.

Great quote!

Yes, the race between knowledge development and wisdom development is the central fact of modern life.

We are ever more like the 12 year old boy whose just been given the keys to the car, a case of booze, and a loaded handgun.

A related question to "when will science end?" could be...

Could we stop knowledge development if we wanted to?

If not, is it fair to say that we are developing knowledge, or is it more accurate to say that knowledge is developing us?

Do you even know what the word "science" means?

Science will end when humankind ends, just like everything else will end.

Ok, thanks. So if we don't kill ourselves first, or get hit by an asteroid etc, are you saying knowledge is essentially infinite? You know, so long as we're here, there will always be new things to learn?
