My recent posts on FB sure weeded out "friends" though. Some I had known for decades. No debate, no attempts at conversion. A couple mentions of prayers on my behalf and candles being lit for me. I didn't lose anyone that really has a big impact on my life.

anyone who will not associate with someone just because of their beliefs isn't a friend anyways. They were just associates, associating... big difference between friends and associates, friends are people you'll actually do something for, associates are just there to talk to you.

That's why I put the word friends in quotes...I get that concept. As I said, I didn't lose anyone that was all that important anyway.

I'm not anti-social. I'm pro-solitude. Sleepy

In college, 1995. All my friends were atheists as well. No comming out, just one of the crowd. Perhaps one day this will be the norm.

The old gods are dead, let's invent some new ones before something really bad happens.

I can't recall ever making an official announcement.

When it comes to religious opinions relating to god I am atheistic; as for god as a sort of philosophical speculation, my version, I am probably best described as agnostic, though I don't really like any isms.

RE: When did you first publicly announce you were an atheist?
Slowly to certain people over a period of 5-10 years. Publically, it was New Years Eve 2010 and there was much vodka to blame as i was surrounded by neighbors that are all religious and assumed i was too.
Having been the President of the HOA for our neighborhood one of my tea party pals who's quite sane and a ton of fun to hang with told me i should run for public office.............
I told him that i could not do it for some personal reasons. He pushed back asking why..i told him its something that most folks would not find appealing...he then said "Now i need to know, what are you a rapist or child molester?" SO there i was faced with NOT answering again and becoming the neighborhood rapist..or coming out. So i proclaimed i was an Atheist and it quickly grew silent. My wife's jaw hit the ground. She's sort of a Christian, kind of a social christian..if you will. And it bothers her that she's married to a guy that don't believe in god. Well, she was put off and the others were like deer in headlights. There i was, like big foot and the Yeti...something they'd heard of but never seen. THEN for the next hour it was "Ask the Atheist".

My neighbors still love me but know i know to much about the bible to debate it. That was the night that i had a catholic neighbor get mad at me for stating Jesus said "I did not come to bring peace, but a sword". He insisted i was making it up.

The wife and i squabble over it from time to time but i no longer keep it on the down low. I dont wear it like a badge, like ALL the christians do around these parts...but when asked, i answer immediately hoping for a rebuttal.

RE: When did you first publicly announce you were an atheist?
I've been atheist my whole life. I sort of bounced the idea of god around when I was under 10 years old but never grasped it. I never referred to my disbelief as a child because I wasn't aware of the term for it. I was made to believe that atheists were devil worshipers. Not like it was engrained in me but it's what I came to think growing up. I've been a loud mouthed, avid atheist since 1999 I think. 10th grade when I finally annouced to a group of people that I had never believed in god.

RE: When did you first publicly announce you were an atheist?
I had been thinking about it for a while on my own. Then last year my dad was down visiting from Maine and he asked me directly about my faith. I told him then that I didn't believe in God any more- but didn't call myself and atheist. The next hour was spent with my dad telling me how worried he was about me, how wrong I was, and how much he loved me. I really appreciated the talk, even though I didn't say much. My thoughts weren't fully formed in my own mind to really discuss it in detail.

RE: When did you first publicly announce you were an atheist?
I never flat out announced it but got into debates arguing for it with friends early on at some points.. ramblin' nights at taco bell or white castle up late lead to these discussions.

I did publicly say it in an archaeology class and got a high five from a guy who eventually became my friend.
