They all collected at the gate leading to the front door. They knew Rosie wasn't coming back.

I am always amazed at how accurately they can read people. It's your body language, intonation and I think they can smell chemical changes in your body - since they can predict seizures and such.

RE: When do you put the dog down?
You have to balance your feelings against the dog's.

The last dog I had was a bouvier des flandres. For those that don't know the breed -- think of a schnauzer - that weighs 140 lbs...... (when they get a haircut)....
They're a great breed --- good with kids, quiet, affectionate -- and massive -- an odd combination.

She got cancer - and we took her to U of Mich - to the vet school and they tried some experimental stuff --- it didn't work.

She got too weak to walk -- couldn't even "do her business" by herself.

So, I put her on a blanket in the garage and gave her a hunk of meat to chew on. Dad helped me carry her outside into the open, and I put three quick rounds into the back of her head.

....................

Not for everyone -- but the point is -- make it as quick and painless as possible --- even if it does hurt you.

And as strange as it seems - you'll feel better about yourself later................

.......................................

The difference between prayer and masturbation - is when a guy is through masturbating - he has something to show for his efforts.

Rosie is down.

I'm sorry. I hope she had a wonderful life with you. That's all you can ask for.

He is deformed, crooked, old, and sere,
Ill-fac’d, worse bodied, shapeless every where;
Vicious, ungentle, foolish, blunt, unkind,
Stigmatical in making, worse in mind.

I can only dream of having someone in my life that is kind enough to put me down when it's my time. When we show mercy to our critters without regard to our own feelings is when we truly show our love for them.
Rosie was lucky to have you brotherman.

So many cats, so few good recipes.

You did the right thing. Hug

You also made me cry. Bad, Girly! Bad! No cookie for you!

We have enough youth. How about looking for the Fountain of Smart?

Hug

So sorry, buddy, but it was time. Now go hug the rest of your pack.

Excuse me, I'm making perfect sense. You're just not keeping up.

When do you put a dog down?

Usually later than you should. Weeping

If the animal is in distress or no longer able to eat/drink it is probably already past the time it should have been done.

Only once have I seen a cat that was beyond ready to be put down make a recovery.
And there have been a lot of cats.

My golden retriever, Poppy, had cancer in the hip and leg and was suffering. The only treatment left was amputation that might prolong her life.

I gave her a final Saturday with a favorite breakfast, a ride in the car, a visit with old friends, a little gentle fetch, and a swim.

The vet came to my house and put Poppy down out in the back yard where we'd play. She died in my arms.
