We wouldn't be sending asteroids back to explode over major terrestrial cities. We would simply be developing the technology to do so. The actual chunks would be tiny. It would be fine. No one would ever use the technology for evil.

Give me your argument in the form of a published paper, and then we can start to talk.

Kinetic energy weapons - yeah I can definitely see that as a potential threat. Underground bunkers wouldn't be safe from this sort of thing.

You could do precision strikes and any underground structure would be destroyed. Could even cause localised earthquakes depending on how big it is. It wouldn't create lots of radiation unlike nukes.

Still the benefits from asteroid mining and the ways space industry can improve our lives outweigh the negatives.

We already have the means to wipe ourselves out. If we have a foothold in space at least the continuation of our species wont be dependent on this planet anymore.

I side with technology. Too late to get scared and crawl back to the stone age.
