Really, it helps to watch the movies, that being the good ones. Watch Star Trek II Wrath of Khan, Star Trek IV The Voyage Home and Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country. These movies give you all the backstory you'll ever need on the Orignal Series.

Pretty much all you need to know about the characters is this: Kirk is awesome, Spock is quiet, McCoy is grumpy (because of Spock), Uhura listens to stuff, Chekov smiles, Sulu says "Aye sir" and bleeps some buttons, and Scotty complains.

Essentially, Revenant is right when it comes to it series wise. The Next Generation had the job of convincing the kids and teenagers of the 80's and 90's to tune in to the show, therefore explaining the backstory of all the important events leading to TNG (the peace with Kligons, the further cold war with the Romulans ect). Once you feel confident, give the three *mentioned* movies a watch.

*Do not* however watch anything else. We all genuinely mean this. Star Trek I The Motion Picture is a piece of crap. Star Trek V has one good scene. One. You can watch Star Trek III, but it's coming right after the awesomeness of Wrath of Khan, and it can't live up as a direct sequel. Also, stay away from the Next Generation movies. They all suck expect for First Contact (Star Trek 8), but even that one is pretty dumb. Star Trek Insurrection is one of the worst movies ever made, EVER, so don't see that one.

But she didn't enter the show until season four.

Also there's a lot of Native American woo crap throughout the series.

That's right. Start with season four.

Seriously though, the next generation is a good starting point. It really was tame at first so bear with it.

My favorite is Deep Space Nine during the last two seasons. I love the Defiant.

I thought they overdid it with that too. I don't know what the writers were trying to accomplish.

And regardless of which ones are best overall, the original series has the best fight scenes. And say what you will about the outdated story lines, but William Shatner can act.

They pandered to counter the obvious atheist bent that was TNG

So did DS9 with Bajor and all that crap with the wormhole.

No, Shatner can act. Shatner is the only reason you should ever watch Star Trek Generations after all, or atleast parts of it.

And to be perfectly honest, the reason I don't care about reboot Star Trek films is exactly that. No Shatner, no Kirk. And while I love Karl Urban and Simon Pegg, they're not McCoy or Scotty to me.

Yeah avoid anything at all with the reboots. Just awful films.

That is totally not fair. Karl Urban absolutely freakin' nails it as Bones.
