Why I Am An Atheist
I remember my childhood, at least the parts that didn’t involve
traumatic bullying. I remember my first exposures to this concept of
religion. I don’t remember where I heard about it first, but it
certainly wasn’t from my parents. They didn’t bother teaching me about
any religions because they are not particularly religious themselves. If
anything, at most they may be deists, but I doubt that they are even
that far. I have never asked them and I guess there is not a reason to.

In these regards, I consider myself one of the luckier atheists out
there, because my parents didn’t even bat an eyelash when I “came out”
as an atheist. I have heard horror stories of families that are supposed
to love unconditionally no matter what that have shunned and bullied
their children into trying to convert back to their religions when their
children declare themselves atheists. Religious people are always
talking about “morals” and that without religion we would all be lawless
thieves, rapists, and murderers. But when I hear these stories about
parents shunning and bullying their children because they are not
religious, that doesn’t sound very moral to me.

But despite all of these things, most of which I was blind to until I
started questioning religion, I gave it a try. My Grammy took me to
church, I waited through the service, trying not to fall asleep as
various people came up and talked about their favorite scriptures, and
then my favorite part: the crackers and wine. That was the only part I
liked about church. I also tried prayer. None of my prayers was
answered. I prayed and prayed night after night for god to let the
bullying stop, to let the kids at school be nicer to me. It never did.
They never were. My prayers went unanswered.

I searched on the internet for reasons why my prayers were
unanswered, and after pages and pages of “you are not trying hard
enough” and “you must be doing it wrong”, I came upon an answer that
made sense: that based on the evidence we have now, God does not appear
to exist at all. So I looked more into it. I looked at the lack
of archaeological evidence for the existence of Christ, for the lack of
physical observable evidence for signs of design in the universe, at
everything. And it all finally made sense. My questions were answered,
and I realized that instead of depending on a deity that doesn’t exist, I
had to take action for myself and fix my own problems.

In the years after my discovery, I did better at school, other kids
started to like me better, and my life got pretty damn good. I was free
from the delusions of religion, free from the dependency on an invisible
sky-totalitarian dictator of souls that didn’t even exist. I was an
atheist. I was, and still am, proud to be one.

It would be awesome if you did, though.

Oh, and welcome to TTA, OP.
