Why TTA Forum is Awesome
So, I've been searching around the good ol' internets for a relatively small Christian forum (so I don't get bogged down with replies) that I can join in order to learn more about why Christians believe what they believe and why they reject other beliefs. In my search, I have much more often than not found that the forums' rules pretty much exclude anybody but a Christian (and sometimes other denominations!) from joining. I find it both telling and puzzling that they do not allow for other points of view on their forums. On the one hand, I can understand that they don't want people trolling the forums (though there are measures that can be taken to solve that), but on the other hand, I do not understand what they are so afraid of. If they are sure in their beliefs, then other opinions should be allowed to be brought forward and discussed. Finally, there are people like me out there who just want to learn stuff about Christianity from people who believe in it. I can read up on the religion all I want, but I can learn so much more from dialogue and discussion!

I finally found a forum (http://www.christianityboard.com/) where I could join, but I am literally not able to post in certain forum areas (I am prevented from replying to/starting threads in these areas, which really hinders me from asking questions). This censorship is, in my opinion, detrimental to the establishment of positive relations between theists and agnostics/atheists. How can we learn from each other if one side is prevented from speaking to the other?

Anyways, this is why the Thinking Atheist Forum is so awesome. We have, what, one rule? Otherwise, it's pretty much a free-for-all melee... And yet, it works. It works wonderfully. We have discussions that we would not otherwise have if we were bogged down with rules that infringed on our free speech. Despite our lack of rules, our threads have remained, for the most part, civil and respectful - and when members do get out of hand, there are always others who call out on them.

So, thank you to the admins/moderators (and fellow members!) for making this forum such a welcoming environment ^.^ I did not realise what a treat it is until I took a look at other forums.

RE: Why TTA Forum is Awesome
I think it says a lot about a group of people that doesn't need moderation from higher ups. Ron made a post on the EvolutionFairytale forum sneering at our lax rules, but I always saw the lack of need for strict rules as a good thing. I think it largely stems from when there was no mods(I've always found it fitting when there was no higher power on the atheist forum) and so there was no way to enforce rules.

Anyway, if you are still around for a small Christian site, there's Gamers4Jesus which is small and doesn't have any laid out rules against atheists. They are a little bit very far to the right, but that's what I use when I want to get an opinion from the religious right. I've never tested my limits on what is allowed to be posted by me, but just for gaining insight it works fine. If you want a more moderate Christian view, I don't know where to send you. Sorry.

I don't believe Jesus is the son of God until I see the long form birth certificate!

Here is a Christian forum that doesn't put any restrictions on nonChristians:

The information in ancient libraries came from real minds of real people. The far more complex information in cells came from the far more intelligent mind of God.

RE: Why TTA Forum is Awesome
Weren't there two creationists who came by , talked to us in a thread and then left when asked to by their moderators ? - we have freedom of speech.
This forum is beautiful because the people here are great , the admins are helpful ( and empathic - thanks for the talks in my starting thread Stark) and the users are just plain decent people. We don't get any rules (besides basic) and the admins aren't trigger happy (try the escapist forums to see what I mean) AND most importantly there is no censorship or restriction which makes this forum indeed awesome.

RE: Why TTA Forum is Awesome
Found this thread by chance when sifting through the referrers on my forum. I'm actually the owner of the forum first mentioned. I hope my decision to sign up and post in this discussion is not seen as rude. My intention is simply to bounce some things off you folks and maybe learn at least a little bit along the way.

The site was (originally) open to posting for everyone. I think it's awesome a forum on a "controversial" topic can be as open as this place at first glance, and that was wholly my intention. When I first read the thread, I was delighted about the remark that SecularStudent made about being comfortable signing up. Good stuff.

But that happiness changed pretty quickly. It's a problem that, believe it or not, began to come to my attention several months ago. I've had to repent - to use religious verbiage - of my own complacency in turning an unfriendly eye towards someone like Secular above. It was not my intention, but it was a result of my choices. That's not a very good thing from the standpoint of my belief nor is it a good thing from a forum in general.

So back to TA. Christianity itself has some issues to work out, and the division within the faith is already rather intense. Unfortunately past and current attitudes on both sides tend to antagonize and inflame. Thinking about that context with TA, which I am currently exploring, you all seem to like the freedom of the community. Maybe I can work to not have the narrow focus, but opening something like a Christian forum is not as feasible, but there are ways around it.

For instance, as a practical application, the reason I locked down the posting originally was a result of several hundred various porn/sickening images (for anyone to look at) posted one evening on my forum simply because it was a Christian forum. The same group repeated the same theme for the span of several weeks.

It's a tough line to walk, and again I think it's pretty sweet a forum can do it period. Just trying to learn here. Smile

I love it here. I feel that I can speak my mind no matter what my opinion is and have that opinion met with an open minded attitude. I feel good each and every time I post here at TTA.

RE: Why TTA Forum is Awesome
How about, in stead of having a few of one party go to the other party to debate (if one or two Christians were to come here, we would be them to death with arguments, and they would be unable to reply to all of them), we have some forum that has a religious, a non-religious and a debate sub-forum.
That way you can let enormous flame wars commence in one topic, and have a more civil, regulated argument in another topic, and all should be well!

But more on-topic-ish, I think you can always say that you're not a full-blown anti-theist, but rather be a bit more calm and say you doubt their beliefs, and ask them how they explain fact x, y and z. That way the atmosphere will be much better, and you won't be bombarded or kicked out by mods...

RE: Why TTA Forum is Awesome
Makes my day to see posts like these. Thanks guys!

CGeek,

First off, welcome to the forum! Second, it's not rude at all that you decided to sign up and post. Quite the opposite really. I'm glad to see you felt comfortable doing so, and look forward to you participating in some discussions. We have a few Christian members, but it can get pretty overwhelming being on a forum that is 99% atheists and 1% Christians so unfortunately, we tend to quickly lose our Christian members. (Understandably so).

The rules here seem to really work for us (the "no moderation" thing), but I feel your pain with regard to having trolls that post crap on your forums. We atheists have our very own troll that goes by the name of David Mabus (among others) and it sucks having to track down those posts and delete them and ban his account. I found though, that by not having to do lots of moderating, and having some vigilant members here that always catch and report this asshat quickly, it's pretty easy to stay on top of it. Especially with the arrival of our web designer DeepThough, who is pretty awesome.

It's tempting sometimes to ban users that are obvious trolls (TrollWreck comes to mind) but I resist the urge, and for the most part it works out for the best. It would take a lot to get me to ban someone, and I think we are a better, more open forum for it.

Again, Welcome, and feel free to get involved. We do have some threads that are not about atheism directly as well, but jump into any that you like!
