It's like an interpretation of a poem - everyone interprets relative to themselves. Its like a horoscope - you have to deliberately read adversely to fuck it up... and that would be dishonest.

Tarot cards have an explicit vocabulary of symbols so, a 'reading' can be done by anyone.

A reading is an interesting process of working 'with' a client to let them guide the read. The client opens up trust, and bit by bit, is really the one making their own decisions. The reader is just a guide to help establish interpretation and reinforcement of security and decisions. It's like having several heart to heart conversations with a friend and getting their feedback and their encouragement, to get your guts up about something troubling you. (And paying them and not being fucked up about someone knowing all your shit.)

I hypothesize that processes such as Tarot (palmistry, etc.,.) were somewhat the forerunner of psychotherapy. The processes are similar in that one person helps another with difficult decisions and possible insecurities ... but really, the person being 'helped' is doing most of the work. I find it a very interesting topic.

The cards are there to reinforce trust, decisions, confidence and security. Security for the client's decision-making and job security for the reader. Wink

Though I have no idea, I'd say your friend is most probably NOT psychic. But I bet she honestly believes she can help people with 'insight' she is able to provide from the cards that come up in front of her.

On my five-year road to rationality after losing my faith, I took up Tarot. I didn't regard it as divination by any means, but rather, simply another lens through which I might view the issues I had in mind at the time. It did help teach me to internalize other possible ways of looking at something, so that it became easier to understand different perspectives.

It is random input, not a lens. Dodgy

RE: Why do people continue to be stupid?
I actually had the misfortune to meet a fraud faith healer. My younger sister was diagnosed with colitis and my grandparents who are devout Hindus insisted and put pressure on my parents to make an appointment with a faith healer who was well reputed in our local area. A few relatives had already seen the faith healer and recommended it. It was a complete waste of time as expected. We waited for 2 hours for my sister to be seen to and the entire spectacle took 1 minute. He touched her stomach, chanted a load of crap in Gujarati and announced that she was healed. Needless to say her illness did not magically recover. In fact she was sick the next day due to all of the bloody incense which did not "unfog the inner eye" or whatever it was meant to do.

RE: Why do people continue to be stupid?
I'd like to make a small point. The people that believe these silly things aren't necessarily stupid. Intelligent people can believe in some very strange things, as can atheists, professors, scientists, etc. In fact, sometimes being smart can make it harder to get out from under false beliefs, because someone that's intelligent can be quite good at making seemingly sound rationalizations for those beliefs.

There's a wide variety of reasons that people believe in things, and sometimes it's a mystery to me as well. Yet, sometimes there are identifiable reasons. One is that people often want to believe. The background motivation for doing so may be unique, different or even change. Many Christians I've met often seem to want to believe because they think their belief makes them a good person, and who doesn't want to be seen as a good person in their community? Some people I've met that believe in "out there" type of supernatural or paranormal things (bigfoot, Loch Ness monster, alien UFO's, ghosts, psychic phenomena, etc.) seem to want to enrich a boring existence somehow. They seem to find wonder and excitement in a fantasy world instead of realizing just how incredibly amazing real life explanations can be. At times, it may be sheer ignorance. I have a couple of very smart co-workers at my job. They're good people, they're far from stupid, but they buy into the most inane conspiracy theories, and I mean the lot of them. 9/11 truthers, one world order, Jewish conspiracy, Illuminati, the masons, and so on. I've had friendly chats with both of them (one's even an atheist!) and they both lack a solid epistemology. Neither one understands what makes a solid or erroneous argument. Neither one is at all good at spotting logical fallacies, and neither of them has high standards of evidence. Also, with conspiracy theorists, I often suspect that they have an ego issue, in that believing in these things makes them feel good. Like they're "in" on it, too smart to fall for it, and not a "sheeple". I think there's a thrill they get for being in the minority of people that can see through the dastardly plans of ________.

Now, a lot of this is supposition on my part, and some of it is mere observation. So as always, take it with a grain of salt.

Of course. But my point was that by making me consider aspects of an issue I hadn't heretofore, it helped me learn how to turn a problem over and look at it from different angles.

Perhaps "lens" was an imperfect choice of word, but that's a semantic quibble ... something I generally avoid, myself.

Sorry to sidetrack the discussion but this hits on a peeve of mine. "Addiction" refers to a physical state where your body literally craves a substance and you will suffer real adverse health impacts if you don't ingest the substance.

People don't watch a lot of porn because they are "addicted" to it. They watch a lot of porn because they like watching porn. A lot. Why we feel this societal need to make excuses for these people is beyond me.

I think the same is true about so called sex addiction. You can live without sex. You just like it. And, if you are lying and/or cheating to get more, then you are someone who likes sex a lot and is also a douchebag. But, you're not going to go through withdrawal if you go 3 days without getting laid.

You know what they say. Some ways of thinking are hard to break after viewing something the same for many many years. Thanks for the correction!

I try to only use my intelligence maybe 2% of the time, even absolutely necessary. The rest of the time, being stupid makes the world... not quite as boring.

I think people sometimes confuse compulsions and obsessions with addictions. Or they simply use the word addiction to make it seem like it's something that cannot be controlled. It's spin.
