Why do people make promises they don't intend to keep?
I get hurt and or frustrated when it happens, perhaps because I try to do what I say I am going to do, when I say I am going to do it.

Why even bother to say anything at all if you aren't going to follow through? Not a nice way to treat people. Weeping

RE: Why do people make promises they don't intend to keep?
So few words of promise hold any meaning with people anymore.

I promise, I swear, I give my word, and even I love you. They all have become nearly meaningless words of fancy. Say them because the situation dictates not because you actually mean them.

It's sad. But it is. I hate to say it but I am immediately distrustful of people until they prove to me that they say what they mean and mean what they say. Few people I know follow this ideal. Most people are full of shit.

I usually try to remember not to expect a promise to be kept. As depressing as that may seem at first, when someone keeps their promise it's awesome and memorable. Not to mention uplifting. And when they don't it's no big thang.

I agree but it shouldn't be that way.

You shouldn't find it surprising that someone keeps their word.

Since I was born with total recall of verbal input, (the verbal equivalent of photographic memory), this has always been a huge issue for me. I hear ya. I just look at 'em, like "what ? You said bla bla bla" ... finally they get it, they can't lie to me.

You're right, Anj, it shouldn't be that way but it is.

But I think the same way as Luc as it prevents hurt and disappointment.

Because it shuts the person up and gets them off my back.

It's because we're biased towards making a big deal out of it when it happens to us, but minimise or dismiss it when we do it to others Smile

Give me your argument in the form of a published paper, and then we can start to talk.

I've learned to listen to actions more than words.

I was just saying, I need to stop being so honest and nice to people. I keep getting shafted by total bastards.
