That is true. What isn't true is that you can equate that with them being guesses and maintain any credibility.

I could argue that many, if not most, are proven to be incomplete as additional evidence comes to light. Calling them "wrong" is an exaggeration although not nearly as bad as tarring theories as guesses.

I actually believe in evolution, and there is some evidence for it...but it's still a theory.

How do people not get that?

Rhetorical

Yes, it is a theory and it is based on mountains of evidence. It isn't a guess.

I agree that a theory isn't a blind guess as does the definition, and even more so for scientific theories.

I'm glad we are getting somewhere.

Peace

Since the Theory of Gravity is "just a theory" Pops, please walk out a 50 story window and we'll see how factual you find this "just a theory". K ?

Gravity is a law, Ass.
So much for ol pops being an ignoramouse incapable grasping the scientific method. Evidently the same cannot be said about you.

Rolleyes I think the book is pretty clear on your track here now. Well done at expounding what it is you claim you "understand" and strive for.

Sorry, Pops, but you are just wrong. There is a "law of gravity" and there is a "theory of gravity". Scientific laws describe consistent, observable things or events but they do not explain why those things or events are as they are -- that's what the theories do. Laws are not somehow more proven or more reliable than theories; in many ways you need the laws before you can have the theories and not the other way around. Theories do not "become" laws, they explain them.

No shit
I was referring to Newton's law of gravity.

Not the theory of general relativity by Einstein.

Facepalm

So please explain your objection to Bucky Ball's reference to the theory of gravity... saying "gravity is a law, ass" implies that he was mistaken somehow. He could certainly have referenced the law of gravity but since the discussion had been about theories that would actually have been less appropriate. His post was relevant and accurate and your response appeared to betray ignorance of the difference between a scientific law and a scientific theory.

A scientific law is a mathematical description of behavior and is man-made.
A scientific theory is an explanation of the causes and effects of the behavior based on evidence.

No one mentioned that, did they? Consider
Why are you bringing that up?
