Why does right wing America love Franco?
Just why exactly?

I actualy encounterd someone who thought that Franco was the "greatest political leader" Europe ever had. And was shocked to find that it seems that this is a sentiment towards a savage fascist dictator shared throughout most of the American right.

All because of the idiotic and repeated uttering of the phrase:"He thought the communists".

No. He dismanteld a republic, his invasion caused the rising of stalinist forces.

And most important of all, he tried to exterminate the cultural and ethnic idendetety of the Basques and Catalonians. Something that many people forget, especialy concerning the Catalonians. Almoust the entire cultural and artistic elite of Catalonia were murderd, even the president of the football club FC Barcelona. And most of Francos victims were infact Catalonians.

There is absolutly no doubt about what he was, a fascist dictator who wasnt a bit better than Mussolini, Hitler or Horti. Spain is pritty much the only country in Europe where you can find delusional right wing conservatives believing that he had a "not to bad" legacy. And considering all of this, I find it breathtaking and outright disgusting that some right wing Americans voice their support of such a fascist dictator.

RE: Why does right wing America love Franco?
I actually had a history teacher, who was teaching me before the summer ended, who called Franco a "paternalistic and benevolent leader". He referred to his ideology as "benevolent fascism". This really shocked me, considering Franco killed between 15,000 and 50,000 in the first decade of his rule. And I have yet to see any form of fascism being benevolent.

What really surprised me was that this was coming from a liberal teacher who just about kicked me out of the classroom for criticizing immigration.

It was a total WTF moment.

I have never run across this sentiment, though I am in a rather liberal bastion.

I don't think most of them know who Franco was.

RE: Why does right wing America love Franco?
I would hesitate to call Franco a fascist dictator, and to call Francoist Spain a fascist country. He was a conservative authoritarian who worked together with falangists as long as it benefited him, but as soon as it didn't he pushed them out on the margins of Spanish political life.

He and his regime were definitely assholes with little regard for human rights though - including the right to live. So if American conservatives are glorifying him I suspect that they cherry pick and twist him into being a defender of religion and tradition against liberals and socialists, while conveniently sweeping the terrors of his regime under the rug.

Ignorance and wishful thinking - no other reasons.

I've never met a single American who expressed any adulation for Franco. It's tough enough to find someone here who knows who Franco was much less admires him.
