It's an attempt to prepare the ground for special pleading and to legitimize an argument from ignorance.

Ask them to define nothing.

If they do attempt to define "nothing" then ask them how one can confirm that something can or can't come from nothing.

The invisible and the non-existent look very much alike

"i dont know" would be a good and honest answer. Let your opponent claim to know....which he cant. Tongue

The other issue is that, "Who is claiming something comes from nothing?"

If they reply "Physicist claim something comes from nothing." and point to the Big Bang you can reply that they are (As far as I know, Real Physicist please correct me) wrong and that the current knowledge can only go back to a certain 'time' and 'point' beyond (Before? Consider ) which we still don't know.

I might respond one of these ways:
1) I don't know, but you don't either so assuming an answer is correct because you choose to believe it is so does not make it so.
2) I didn't realize that "nothing" could really exist. This seems counterintuitive. So if "something" has always existed (as long as there has been time to exist), why do you assume the "something" is a god and not the universe?
3) How can god exist if something can't come from nothing? If they presume that god always existed, see response 2 above

We could ask about god - if it came from nothing why universe couldn't.

Or look into Lawrence Krauss "A Universe from Nothing" for answers.

The first revolt is against the supreme tyranny of theology, of the phantom of God. As long as we have a master in heaven, we will be slaves on earth.

RE: Why is there something rather than nothing argument????
In comparison -- the vacuum of space (which is basically "nothing") -- far displaces any matter in it........

If you consider nothing as infinite --- and matter as "x" ---- infinite divided by x, is infinite.

Thus mathematically proving that the entire universe is comprised of nothing.

Anything you see otherwise, is simply a hallucination.......
