William Lane Craig and the Gallop
I just watched a debate held recently between William Lane Craig and Alex Rosenberg at Purdue University (http://open.biola.edu/resources/is-faith...asonable). As usual, Craig employs the 'ole Gish Gallop and thoroughly pollutes the debate with equivocations and smuggled concepts before anything can be discussed. As a result, nothing can truely be discussed and Rosenberg (as usual) is left drowning in a sea of ill-defined concepts and bad logic.

Matt Dillahunty once said of William Lane Craig, "Without the Gish Gallop, the man has NOTHING". And I agree. As a result, young apologists who try to use Craig's arguments against an experienced adversary must be shocked at how quickly these arguments fail if the Gish Gallop can not be employed. Also, once these young Apologists realize how week these arguments are, many of them - or at least the smartest ones - probably quickly realize what a BS artist this William Lane Craig really is. As a result, many of them probably lose all confidence in Apologetics and "Reasonable Christianity" with the net result of damage to their faith. I know that as a Christian I went through a similar experience when I realized what an idiot CS Lewis and his ilk were.

So... I make a toast to William Lane Craig: a man that does more damage to faith than most atheists ever could. Smile Long may he Gallop!

RE: William Lane Craig and the Gallop
Except you are assuming that the person using his arguments will use ration, reason, and logic to look at the refutations of their arguments and that they won't just ultimately fall-back on the safe old claim of "well, you just have to have faith."

There is no reasoning with some people, and a lot of them like to spout forth their ignorance and bad logic and shitty examples. A lot have really big Egos........get it?

Sure, I suppose 99.9% of them will fall back on Faith but....they had to give up the arguments, didn't they? They had to give up what they perceived as Reason! In other words, most Apologetics is dead for them as a supporting structure of their faith.

Another node of the Faith Network is corrupted.

The entirety of the faith system is corrupted, getting that through people's heads is a different story though.

Hey...I agree with you 100%! And, as far as "getting through to people", I figure they'll make that journey by themselves once they feel the time is right - every Christian I ever talked to deconverted this way - by themselves. However, until these Christians are ready to travel down the road of dconversion, I figure that anything that can be done to keep the road clear and well marked is a good investment in the future.

RE: William Lane Craig and the Gallop
One can hope they will start that line of reasoning, but some will just wander down a path of corrupted logic that will lead them into a corner of new irrational beliefs. They may eventually come out of this, but the issue is not questioning in general, it is what questions to ask. And realizing Craig is full of shit only means Craig is wrong, not that they should ask questions about Christianity or god in general.

The atheist is a man who destroys the imaginary things which afflict the human race, and so leads men back to nature, to experience and to reason.
