Wim Hof/Iceman
Hi
I am new here and I came a across this little story that makes me wonder because one of my friends(who is a New Age believer) keeps telling me that this is proof that mind is over matter.
I could also not find any skeptical information about this case. It is a person with the name Wim Hof who has broke several record and this person claims that he can "turn his own thermostat up" by using his mind and meditation(some Tummo form of meditation).
This is written on the wikipedia page about him: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wim_Hof

Hof also claims that he was tested like he writes on his web-page:

http://www.icemanwimhof.com/science

This is what one of the scientists claims about him:

According to Maria Hopman of the UMC St Radboud Nijmegen, the things that Wim is capable of are scientifically viewed as impossible. Maria Hopman did a cold physiological experiment on Wim and examined him while he stood a cylinder filled with 700 kilograms ice cubes. An untrained person would likely die from hypothermia; Wim, however, has never had that risk. His body temperature remained constant around 37 degrees Celsius; Hopman expected his temperature to drop over. She thinks it´s possible that Wim can influence his autonomic nervous system, which regulates, among other things, the heart rate, breathing and blood circulation. Yet, her head is filled with many questions like: How can a man raise his metabolism twice as high without any increase of heart rate? How is it possible that Wim does not shiver while this would be the normal reaction of a body exposed it to extreme cold? Hopman is continuing her investigation on Wim to find the answers to her questions.

There are also some pdfs about the research:

http://www.innerfire.nl/files/can-medita...hopman.pdf
http://www.innerfire.nl/files/concentrat...ckkers.pdf

So now the questions are: Is this paranormal?? Can someone really control his temperature with his mind by only using meditation like Hof claims?? Or is this just a trick and what is the biological explanation of this iceman?
If someone can answer these question and find a skeptical explanation I would be very grateful. Thanks for reading this and your time..

RE: Wim Hof/Iceman
So far he seems to be on the level. He was scientifically and independently observed during all his tests. But whatever the 'secret', it's apparently a freak condition, because nobody else has until now come forward with anything remotely similar. The best (?) description of it is that he can control his metabolism through sheer willpower. Meditation. Kind of like a Hindu Fakir (no, not 'faker'; although...) sticking long pins through his cheeks and levitating, etc. But the 'Iceman' apparently has only one trick up his sleeve. Well... actually there are no sleeves involved at all.

But afaic it's a hoax.

Let's assume that the observed effects are all true. Why do you ask if it's paranormal? That seems like the last question to ask, not the first.

Can he consciously control his autonomic nervous system? It would appear so. But that would not make it paranormal in any way.

Skepticism is not a position; it is an approach to claims.
Science is not a subject, but a method.

Yes you are right its not paranormal when I take a better look at it. Thanks a a lot. This is what I got from the wikipedia
The autonomic nervous system (ANS or visceral nervous system or involuntary nervous system) is the part of the peripheral nervous system that acts as a control system functioning largely below the level of consciousness, and controls visceral functions.[1] The ANS affects heart rate, digestion, respiratory rate, salivation, perspiration, pupillary dilation, micturition (urination), and sexual arousal. Most autonomous functions are involuntary but a number of ANS actions can work alongside some degree of conscious control. Everyday examples include breathing, swallowing, and sexual arousal, and in some cases functions such as heart rate.

He also ran a full marathon in the Namib Desert without water. The run was performed under the supervision of Dr. Thijs Eijsvogels.
Thank you both for the answer it is more clear to me now that there is nothing paranormal here. I only was little shocked about this because Hof claims that he achieved this only thanks to some kind of meditation and I could find no proof that meditation can do such things.. Now that I have looked over on him more skeptically thanks to Chas post - I think that Hof not only did meditation but also a lot of training to achieve this and therefore there is nothing paranormal only the media did something paranormal out of it..

Also thank you Janus for your reply I appreciate it.

We'll see how it pans out. Even if that might still take an awful long time (Houdini's secrets are still secret).

RE: Wim Hof/Iceman
I found this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1N_9HZRVl-g
Wim Hof talks about his method. It seems that he cannot manage heat how he claims because in the 6 minute he is sweating like crazy in a normal room. Maybe his metabolism is only good for cold but not for heat. Then that means its only training like those people who take ice baths..
