Exclamation Withdrawal from the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base?
Are there records of any high profile US politician talking about withdrawing US military forces in Cuba's Guantanamo Bay, and handing autonomy back?

I understand Ron Paul has made blanketed terms of shutting down foreign bases, but did he ever mention the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base specifically?

As far as I can remember, no. Since we are still in the ridiculous posture set by the Kennedy administration it is unlikely to occur as long as Castro and his ilk are running the show.

When one thinks out Paul's statements they tend to be problematic in the long run.

I don't see any evidence that the base would be shut down, let alone downgraded if US special interests had free reign over a "new" Cuba. Germany and Japan were labelled as the lowest of the low, and are now considered the highest of the high, and yet... Granted the land would be "officially" handed over, on the assurance that the base would remain and nothing changes "technically".

1. Aren't all US military bases considered American/home soil (something similar to Embassies)?
2. The torture prisons are just a small piece of infrastructure of the entire base. It's insignificant compared to the countless, technically non US held, prisons around the world that could be substituted (eastern europe, middle east, central asia). This shouldn't have any serious considerations when determining the future of the base.

Yes, Ron Paul would have shut down GTMO if he were elected, but that didn't materialize. The current US President made this one of his campaign promises back in 07/08. He just didn't keep his promise. It is not getting shut down anytime soon (Had a friend that received orders there just today.
