The Beholder is a massive pile of 'fuck you' in D&D. They're most commonly a floating mass of flesh with a gaping maw and a singular eye, crowned by a series of eye stalks each ending in another smaller eye. Each of the stalks has the ability to launch unlimited spell-like abilities (creating spell like effects but without the hassle of actually having to cast a spell) such as Charm, Fear, Sleep, Slow, Telekinesis, Finger of Death, Flesh to Stone and Disintegrate. Not only that, but the massive set eye projects a 150ft long cone of Anti-Magic, creating a field wherever it looks that causes magic to cease functioning. Those made invisible by magic are revealed, those flying fall to the ground, and magical equipment ceases to function while within the area. Needless to say this makes them deadly adversaries, and they're especially annoying when the entire party needs to spend half an hour recalculating all of their character's stats sans magic the first time a DM decides to throw one of these damn things at the party.

Unless you of course have the shield of reflecting I believe it is (though that might be the arrow reflecting one. I can't remember the name of it, the shield that reflects beholder magic back at itself.) in which case they're pie. Also, that was in BG and not D&D (though BG uses D&D rules) so...
