Workplace lawsuit gets NASA tangled up in evolution debate
I found this interesting.

Quote:LOS ANGELES — A computer specialist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory is going to court over allegations that he was wrongfully terminated because of his belief in intelligent design.
Opening statements in the lawsuit by David Coppedge were expected to start Tuesday morning in Los Angeles Superior Court after lawyers spent Monday arguing several pretrial motions.
Coppedge, who worked as a team lead on the Cassini mission exploring Saturn and its many moons, claims that he was discriminated against because he engaged his co-workers in conversations about intelligent design and handed out DVDs on the idea while at work.

Intelligent design is the belief that a higher power must have had a hand in creation because life is too complex to have developed through evolution alone.
Coppedge lost his team lead title in 2009 and was let go last year after 15 years on the mission.

In an emailed statement, JPL dismissed Coppedge's claims. In court papers, lawyers for the California Institute of Technology, which manages JPL for NASA, said Coppedge received a written warning because his co-workers complained of harassment.
They also said Coppedge lost his team lead status because of ongoing conflicts with others.
Caltech lawyers contend Coppedge was one of two Cassini technicians and among 246 JPL employees let go last year due to planned budget cuts.

If he was fired for this reason I think it's ok. If it was just for his (wrong) beliefs, I'm not sure...

When I first heard of it I was a big stunned...but now reading that, clearly there is a difference between having a belief and proselyting to co-workers and giving them unwanted videos.

It seems okay to me, Especially if he was given a warning for doing things which are causing conflict. It becomes more than whatever the set "belief" happened to be.

Seems to me that having non-scientific or anti-scientific beliefs should be sufficient cause for being fired FROM AN INSTITUTION DEDICATED TO SCIENCE.

Just sayin'.

Skepticism is not a position; it is an approach to claims.

What a twat. If there are lots of redundancies being made of course the employee with complaints against him will be one of the ones to go.

These stupid fucks are going to try to turn this into a showcase for their bullshit science.

What we have here is a simple case of employment law. The IDers are going jump on it like flies on shit, trying their best to play the persecuted victim shit whilst getting some free publicity for their bollocks.

Hopefully the case will get a judge that will not let it turn into a religious debate and will bring it to a swift conclusion.

It was also pointed out to me earlier when I saw this that he has waived his right to trial by jury. No shit sherlock, it's far easier to try to convince one fucker of your bullshit than lots of em.

Ideal court transcription.

Judge: David Coppedge are you aware that the termination of your employment was part of a much bigger bunch of redundancies that were always planned at this phase of the project.
DC: Yes your honour.
Judge: Do you also concede that you overstepped workplace boundaries and undermined your employers obligation to its other staff members by bringing your personal religious views into the workplace. Which in turn led to your colleagues making official complaints about your behaviour.
DC: Yes your honour.
Judge: What then are you doing in my courtroom Mr Cabbage.
DC: Mr Coppedge your honour. If you could just look at these DVDs I thi...........
Judge: You are a twat Mr Cabbage, now get the fuck outta my courtroom before I come over there and intelligently design a way to insert my gavel into your ass sideways.

I personally think that god is a myth, I wonder how long I’d last at a christian science centre if I turned up with a DVD on evolution and started spouting off?

Intelligent design, easier to believe in if people didn’t race RIDE-ON FUCKING LAWNMOWERS!!!!
Go out and buy a motorbike you sad beige sorry excuse for a man, and stop wearing floral pants you just look pitiful.

And if there was funding from the state (and I suspect there might be) there is a breach of the US Constitution?
