"Worldwide, deaths caused directly by war-related violence in the new century have averaged about 55,000 per year, just over half of what they were in the 1990s (100,000 a year), a third of what they were during the Cold War (180,000 a year from 1950 to 1989), and a hundredth of what they were in World War II. If you factor in the growing global population, which has nearly quadrupled in the last century, the decrease is even sharper.

So, um, the global death-quota isn't being met because of slackers like us making bread instead of land-mines?

You don't understand this, Peterkin -- the world is a lot safer now because we are spending people's bread-money on armaments, which means that soon you will not have a choice of jobs at all: bread factories and surgical instrument factories will go bankrupt for lack of funding -- we will end up making nothing but weapons of mass destruction.

Then there will be peace -- we will all be dead!

Just think about how many hungry children could be fed from the pentagon's insanely bloated budget, maintaining over a hundred military bases all over the world (to protect us, no doubt Rolleyes ).

Seriously, I think the military (any military) is a self-perpetuating con-game -- offering us protection from the consequences of their actions. Angry
