I might be underestimating the snake somewhat, but wouldn't it have been simpler easier to relocate to snake? Drive a kilometre in a given direction and just leave it?

I have helped relocate a number of snakes. From personal experience make sure the garbage can you put the rattler in does not have a hole in it. That can cause a certain amount of excess excitement when driving across the pasture.
