In general, historical films are either too slow for me, like Schindler's List, or are injected with too much bias or fantasy, like Red Cliff, so I don't like them as historical films. Though for entertainment value alone I can still enjoy the biased/fantastical films.

I wonder, are the Black Hawk Down and Band of Brothers based on real events? I am not so sure.

But To Hell and Back is not only based on real life events, the main actor is the real life person the movie is based upon and that is the most decorated soldier in WW2.

Wikipedia Wrote:Black Hawk Down is a 2001 American war film directed by Ridley Scott. It is an adaptation of the 1999 book of the same name by Mark Bowden based on a series of articles in The Philadelphia Inquirer, which chronicles the events of the Battle of Mogadishu, a raid integral to the United States' effort to capture Somali warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid.

RE: Your Favorite History Based Movies
I don't know much about Black Hawk Down beyond main details of the real operation, but Band of Brothers is definitely based on real events. It follows the story of real people in the 101st Airborne Division, from training to the front lines. It was based on interviews, articles, and reports from people involved with the real events, and episodes begin with interview clips from people portrayed in the series. It takes artistic license, of course, but it's a pretty realistic series as far as 'historical dramas' go.

If something can be destroyed by the truth, it might be worth destroying.

Oh yeah, that's right, I forgot about those interviews and real soldiers during the show. Thanx.

RE: Your Favorite History Based Movies
Alot of really good historical movies have been posted. The worst historical movie ever is The Ten Commandments. It's myth of course but damn, what a crap of a picture that was. It reinforced the erroneous idea that Jewish slaves built the pyramids, that Moses lead a force of millions out of Egypt, that Moses even existed!

Charleton Heston is so awful. The wooden staff that Moses turns into a snake is a better actor that Heston and what's even more amazing is that it won a bunch of Oscars.

Hate this movie, it drives me crazy. Chase

When I think of historical fiction, I don't necessarily think of "true stories" rather, stories true to the historic time frame.

The Lives of Others
Black Book
Ragtime
Black Robe

The Lion King is just a recycled Hamlet.
