Your Favorite Southern (U.S.) Treats?
After moving to the south from California, I was introduced to some southern-centric foods that I had previously never tried. These have really begun to grow on me. My three new favorite southern treats are:

1. The chicken biscut

There is no better way to start your day than a nicely fried piece of chicken slapped between a glorious buttermilk biscuit! I have found that there are establishments around that are dedicated to making only breakfast biscuits and they are awesome!

2. Pimento cheese spread

This is not the same as the crap you usually see jammed into crevice of a celery stalk. This has copious amounts of shredded cheddar cheese mixed with mayo and pimentos. It's great either melted or not and makes a killer grilled cheese sammich

3. Boiled peanuts

I never understood the notoriety that surrounded these until I actually tried some. The texture of the peanut becomes soft, almost gummy and takes on the flavor of what ever you put into the boil (usually cajun spices). I am actually making some boiled peanuts right now using a blend of Thai spices.

I know there are plenty of southerners here, what's your fave?

Grits.

You can get grits here but dammit, no one here in the north knows how to make it.

Excuse me, I'm making perfect sense. You're just not keeping up.

Hmm, the only place that seeks biscuits here is Popeye , so gonna try the second one, and I like my cooked peanuts cooked in saltwater, no extra spices

I don't really like going outside.
It's too damn "peopley" out there....

Would the cheese spread work with other cheeses than cheddar?

I've never seen it done with anything else but cheddar but I suppose you could. It would change the flavor profile though

I didn't realize pimento cheese and chicken biscuits were southern.

Sweet Tea!!!! with fresh mint leaves if I'm really treating myself
Fried green tomatoes
Fried okra
Pickled okra
Dill pickles
Southern style green beans (I've been known to go back for thirds and skip dessert - fat back is essential IMO)
Barbecue flavored pork rinds Blush
Sweet potato fries (had them at my wedding)
Pork stuffed potato with red sauce (Johnny's BBQ in Cullman, AL just off I-65 if you're ever passing through - sooooooo good)
Lemon Icebox Pie
Chess Pie
Peach Pie and peach cobbler and peach fried pies
Muscadine jelly (some of my earliest memories are helping Mom in the kitchen as we made it from grapes I picked on the farm)
...and pork sausage gravy and buttermilk biscuits, or molasses and butter with biscuits

Obviously none of this includes Cajun which is in a league of its own.

Okra is terribly disgusting and should never be associated with good food
