Z-2 Spacesuit!
NASA is currently in design and development phases of the Z-2 spacesuit; a 'next generation' space suit.

And they have put up a poll for us non-NASA civies to join in the fun: Currently NASA has three suit designs that it is Polling:
Biomimicry, Technology &Trends in Society, each one represents specific themes, and we are voting on which design is implemented.

Quote:The "Biomimicry" design draws from an environment with many parallels to the harshness of space: the world's oceans. Mirroring the bioluminescent qualities of aquatic creatures found at incredible depths, and the scaly skin of fish and reptiles found across the globe, this design reflects the qualities that protect some of Earth's toughest creatures.

The design specifically includes segmented pleats at the shoulder, elbow, hip and knee, and electroluminescent wire across the upper torso, which becomes apparent in reduced light.

Quote:"Technology" pays homage to spacesuit achievements of the past while incorporating subtle elements of the future. By using Luminex wire and light-emitting patches, this design puts a new spin on spacewalking standards such as ways to identify crew members.

The design specifically includes electroluminescent wire and patches across the upper and lower torso, exposed rotating bearings, collapsing pleats for mobility and highlighted movement, and abrasion resistant panels on the lower torso.

Quote:"Trends in Society" is based off of just that: being reflective of what every day clothes may look like in the not too distant future. This suit uses electroluminescent wire and a bright color scheme to mimic the appearance of sportswear and the emerging world of wearable technologies.

The design specifically includes gore pleats with contrast stitching throughout to highlight mobility, an exposed bearing at the hip, and electroluminescent wire and patches of varying styles across both the upper and lower torso.

However, these are still prototypes and not planned to be used in space yet, still cool non-the-less; so, how's about it:
Which design do you think will win out? Which do you like?

I saw this the other day on FB. Everyone on that thread posted for the one with the glowing blue "technology". There weren't any descriptions of each suit, just photo's. I like the blue color, I just wish it didn't look like a cross on the chest.

FT, I think they are all unpleasing to the eye. I held out hope for biomimicry but it appears the only difference between the three is the lit pattern design, hardly much of a difference.

I was hoping to see one that looked like this:

I never noticed a cross; just looked like a cool pattern to me.

Yeah, I can see where the names would be a little deceiving in their intent, and they are essentially just deco-changes but I think it's interesting that we at least get some input on the patterns.

Maybe if NASA received more funding they might be able to work toward a suit with some sort of adaptive places, like a chameleon's adaptive skin colours... (Hint, Hint US Government!)

RE: Z-2 Spacesuit!
I saw this article a year ago in popular science. They were also talking about the Z-3.
This is old crap.
The Z-3 is supposed to be skin tight. (Probably not anymore.)
