asking for forgiveness
Hubby and I were talking about free will and that I don't believe there is free will because its go by what gods says or go to hell. Along with how some preachers that say you can't go to heaven if you commit suicide or anything that is deemed that you will go to hell for.
Anyway he said he doesn't believe that as you can ask for forgiveness and all is fine.
I didn't know what to say to this other then so its OK to do whatever you want as long as you ask for forgiveness? So therefore free will?

RE: asking for forgiveness
Free will is NOT a biblical concept. It was invented later by Augustine. In no book is the term Free Will found in the bible.

Give it up.

Compatibilism

To paraphrase Christopher Hitchens:

One takes refuge in philosophical irony to say "Of course there is free will ... in this, we have no choice" but for the christian: they have to have free will ... because their boss says so!

"Free will"?

Odd -- I always thought you got to pay for your decisions.

Make good decisions - they come cheap.
Make bad decisions - it gets expensive.

And there's no invisible sky daddy running the store.

The difference between prayer and masturbation - is when a guy is through masturbating - he has something to show for his efforts.

No He does not, Free will is NOT in the bible.

This is the first time I have ever disagreed with you.

It was I, who made Bible.com change their site at Landover. Their quote used to say "There is no free will in the Bible".

When it was brought to their attention due to posts Pastor Nereu Gargalo made, they changed the site.

True story.

I have been at this shit for many years.

You didn't disagree with me, you disagreed with Hitch.

He was going for cheap laugh ... at Augustinianites' expense perhaps?

Hitchens didn't claim it was in the bible. Do you disagree that many Christians believe that we have free will and that is part of their god's plan?

No I do not. Many Christians believe the idea originated in the bible. They are mistaken.

RE: asking for forgiveness
As an atheist, I don't need anyone's forgiveness.

My morals and knowledge that this is the only life that we are certain to have, grants me the responsibility to make amends for my mistakes if I have wronged someone.

As a theist, you saddle yourself with so much shit that you ask forgiveness for being born.

Insanity - doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results
