RE: bible is a powerful book
I don't think it is the bible or any religious text that has the real power.

It seems the vast majority of believers haven't actually read much of it. If you ask me, I'd say its more likely the preachers who hold the real power of persuasion over people.

As in politics, people are sucked in by the speaker's personality more than by anything they have to say.

Quote:So, no, I don't agree with your premise. The power lies in the indoctrination and threats of those in power - parents, imams, priests, rabbis, etc.

Give me the power to burn people at the stake and in a generation I will have millions worshiping a toaster.

"All hail the life giving warm bread which art in fucking heaven."

Anyone who disputes it goes to the stake. They'll sign up in droves.

Atheism is NOT a Religion. It's A Personal Relationship With Reality!

The Bible is just Deepak with a bunch of -eths added for effect.

We have enough youth. How about looking for the Fountain of Smart?

Well, there's a reason why the Alex character in Clockwork Orange likes the book very much. It strikes a chord with persons like that.

Anyway, as far as language and stories go, just compare it to contemporary books by Roman and Greek authors. Compare it to the Gilgamesh epic and suddenly the emperor is without cloths.

You too can write in the Bible style. Here's a sample....

"...And Saint Attila raised the hand grenade up on high, saying, "O LORD, bless this Thy hand grenade that with it Thou mayest blow Thine enemies to tiny bits, in Thy mercy." And the LORD did grin and the people did feast upon the lambs and sloths and carp and anchovies and orangutans and breakfast cereals, and fruit bats and large chu..."

See?

... Joseph Smith? Is that you?

But seriously, that's basically how the whole book of Mormon is written.
(or, ah, "translated", as it were)

I don't see it as powerful at all. The churches are powerful. Indoctrination is very powerful. The Bible is a freaking joke unless you're seriously blinded by those.
