did you know the Devil beats his wife?
Yesterday I was at a Girl Scout encampment. They were there for the whole weekend, I went up just for Saturday to teach the girls archery.

I was sitting on the bench talking with one of the girls, probably about 13-14 years old when it starts to rain a little bit.

the conversation went like this:

girl: I don't like it when the sun is out and it rains at the same time.
me: why? (I'm thinking about rainbows and it would be cool to see one)
girl: because when the sun is out and it rains at the same time it means the devil is beating his wife.
me: oh. Ohmy..hmm...guess you have to believe in one to believe in the other.

I had to walk away. She just blew my mind with such a casual statement that I ran.

So...
Who's going to be the first to offer up an idea as to who his wife is?

My catholic grandma told me:

"When girls whistle, Mother Mary cries."

I like whistling, always have. Smile Poor Mother Mary is dissolved in tears by now.

Me: Kid, what are you smoking?

.... And where can I get some!?

Methinks the girl's parents are having fun with euphemisms.

It's a family in-joke that the girl has taken literally.

Nah, that's been around for awhile, I heard it as a kid. Used to say it to, when that happened, but only because I thought it sounded funny. I'm only surprised that this poor girl actually took it seriously. She'll grow up someday, hopefully.

But now I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth.

I used to hear it as a kid, but no one I knew of took it literally.
