RE: facepalm-moments for freelancers
I found this in a listing today for a graphic design job:
Quote: If your rate is above $5.00 / hr do not bother applying. Don't waste your or my time.
Lol. $5/hour. Better than $1/hr I guess...

Someone once offered to hire me to translate a 400 page ebook for 50 cents/page though ($200!). I loled.

RE: facepalm-moments for freelancers
You have no idea, well probably you do, how many times I sit there, searching through the job offers and actually saying out loud: "yeah, fuck you, too!" And my hubby will look at me all surprised because I say it seemingly out of nothing Big Grin
Just like this one:
First he gives you a load of instructions and even says "WE ARE NOT SCAMMERS" after saying that a testarticle has not guaranteed pay and then this: "Rate per 500-word article is 2.50 USD."
Like right now I am writing articles and that pay is already low considering the amount of time I put in this and the quality I deliver. But this rate is really only worth a huge "Yeah, Fuck you too!"

I must say, as christmas is approaching I feel the job offers get more and more ridiculous. People want to have their shit finished but they don't want to pay for it anymore.

Makes me appreciate even more the fact that I have this publishing house which is giving me work quite regularly (actually, nonstop).

But I remember the frustration of looking for a job (not exactly the same thing, but similar). Man, I hated it so much and never want to go back to it.

They just want something for google to crawl and consider new content, there is generally absolutely no value for the reader.

Like an article about religion would read:

Religion is practiced by many people. There are many different religions. Religion has versions all over the world. If you like a religion, you can join it. Religions have churches. You can pray in churches. You can also listen to the church leader pray in church. Some church leaders also tell stories about religion.

And so on. They want to rank for the words religion and church and so there are just a whole bunch of sentences with those words in them.

Just so freaking useless!

Dom, yes in general you are right, but that thing was not supposed to be an SEO thing afaik.
right now i am writing SEO articles but my client wants useful articles and he wants the keyword to not scream at the reader.

RE: facepalm-moments for freelancers
So today I received a message from a client. 3000 words translation urgently to be done until the end of business today. That was at 2pm. Money was ok, message was short and apart from the facts, I wrote in the second sentence, the only thing that was there "Are you available?".
So I write, back that I am available, of course no wrong promises, I say depends on the text if I can do it until the end of business.
This client, as I always check the client a little, asked like 30 more contractors. NOONE has been hired, the jobposting still exists. End of business today was 7 hours ago o.O
Either it's not that urgent or I wasn't the only one who did not offer false promisses, and the person tried to find someone, somewhere else.

WOW *bang head against wall*
look what I just found:
Quote:Estimated Budged: 200 Dollar

I have a letter that I have attached. I need someone with good handwriting like the sample to be able to write this letter 2000 times.
I also need you to address envelopes and put the letters inside.

Wow, indeed! (not to mention that whoever agrees to do this will end up with a bout of carpal tunnel syndrome like you wouldn't believe)

RE: facepalm-moments for freelancers
Had to resurrect thread because i was looking for illustration jobs today and found the following:
Quote: Hi, I would like a book cover design.. [long description of what should be on the cover]... My budget for the work is $2.
Two dollars. For a book cover design. I don't care the book cover is just placing text on a solid background, any cover is worth more than two bucks. And this was supposed to include a drawing. WTF.

A new hobby of mine is cruising craigslist for illustration postings. I don't apply to them, because I don't want to be ripped off, but when you see a job and then another listing saying "Re: [job title]" and it's a long-winded response to how utterly shitty the posters of the job listing are (for asking so little, demanding so much) it can really make you feel a bit better.

I saw one yesterday, somebody asking for a photographer and it actually said, "You are not worth [amount] so please be reasonable, you're just taking pictures" etc. There are also a lot that want work done for free, because they think artwork is not worth any money, and artists have no bills to pay or some shit.
