first 50 of 1000 lashes
Badawi was sentenced to 10 years in prison, 1,000 lashes and a fine of 1 million Saudi Arabian riyals (approximately $267,000) in May 2014 by a Saudi court accusing him of insulting Islam, said his wife and a source who followed the case closely.

Dodgy Puke. Whips of that kind shouldn't even be in use right now.

RE: first 50 of 1000 lashes
I'm not sure why some of these incidents end up in international news since the overwhelming majority of things don't. You don't get international news stories every day from the countless people mutilated or killed by middle eastern countries. Nothing spectacular either. Didn't get any international articles when the Saudis were gloating on the internet and showing off the video of the first time they managed to hang 20 people on the same government-issue hanging stage without it breaking. Nobody seems to know that the Saudis have these grand public executions where they decapitate people with a giant sword either, and that is certainly a dramatic event, and should at least gain interest from a living-history perspective if not a human rights one.

I'm not sure what makes the victims in the international stories special though in most cases. Sometimes it's obvious, like pregnant women being stoned to death, but sometimes it's totally random like a farmer or an 'activist' or just a petty criminal being mutilated or killed.
