how to avoid becoming a myrmecologist
so i usually do a lot of lepidoptera rearing, though i only have a few actively growing species currently
instead, i have an ant colony
whilst collecting rotting wood outside this winter for beetle grubs, i must have collected wood with a diapausing carpenter ant queen
i didnt sterilize all of the wood and i stored it in my warm basement
well out of some of it came all these carpenter ant workers
so i scooped it all up and constructed a sealed but ventilated bin for them with tubes leading to cups of food and water
it is interesting to watch them forage, do tropholaxis, and leave chemical trails... but im supposed to be a lepidopterist! im not the next E.O. Wilson
hymemoptera arent my main specialty
i hope this doesnt escallate into me getting dozens of different ants and starting a collection like i did with orchids

no this isnt a serious matter. i doubt i will get engrossed in ants, though it is tempting

I had an ant problem when I lived in an apartment in Plano, Texas. Only after a couple bites that didn't taste right, I saw ants floating in my cereal bowl milk.
