top-spinning eggs...
I have a question and I am looking for a very simple answer. No major deal here, just curious.

My infant grandson loves those hollow plastic eggs and I often set them twirling around on their side on the floor because the colors and patterns are so neat.

Tonight, I had a bit more room and so put a bit more power into the spin on their side....and suddenly they pivoted to spin on their smaller end like a top and a couple pivoted to spin on their larger end, but were a bit more wobbly that way.

I nearly failed physics in high school. Can someone, please, offer a really simple reason how this happens, so one day I can explain it to my grandkids?

Thanks for any who indulge my curiosity and can keep it very simple.

RE: top-spinning eggs...
The higher up the center of gravity is for a top (an egg can be considered a top, for this explanation), the more stable it is. Here's a simple way to get the idea. Take a wooden yardstick and try to balance it on your finger tip. You can do it, but it ain't easy. Now, put a large weight on one end of the yardstick, and balance it on your finger tip, with your finger on the light end, heavy end up. The more weight the better (up to what you can comfortably lift). You can do it because the center of gravity is up far enough that you can control it easily with that long moment arm.

All I know is, if you're not sure if an egg is raw or boiled, you spin it. And that's how you find out Yes

RE: top-spinning eggs...
There are a few factors with each egg spin that can impact its twirl. How much torque you apply to the spin, at what angle the egg hits the surface (affecting the center of gravity) and the evenness of the surface come to mind. To get the egg to spin exactly the same each time you spin it, you would have to account for and control those factors perfectly.

SYZ, that was a great link!

No idea.....

But the other day I dropped a couple of asprin on the floor and the both ended up balanced on edge......

Wonder what the odds are of doing that again????

I'd calculate the odds as 1 : 3,824,003 (approximately).

How does it behave if it is boiled?

Thanks for the link, SYZ.

Apparently it involves magic...or physics, which is a similar thing to me.

Thanks for the replies.

That'll keep me busy for a while testing that estimate.....
