trekkies not what i thought
i used to post on a star trek site and let me tell you that these guys are missing the point of trek much in the same way that bibical literalists are missing the point of the bible. many of them are the most intolerant people ive ever "known." the thing is ive always thought that trekkies were in general foward thinking people. i am disapointed greatly.
any thoughts?

RE: trekkies not what i thought
When diving into the strange and twisted world of geeks and nerds, it's best to shun assumption.

The truth is, it depends on your trekkie.

OS Trekkies (original series) come in three varieties: freaks, nerds, and geeks. Your nerds and geeks can get into some seriously heated discussions, but they retain a basic core of nerdom. Your freaks are full-on fanatics and lose all reason.

Then there are your TNG, DS9, Vo, and Ent Trekkies. These are all fans of later series and stay sane unless you compare ST to Star Wars.

My advice? Stick with the LOTR nerds or the Star Wars geeks, they are waaayyyy easier to deal with.

Oh frak, I fear I may have revealed more of my nerdiness than I meant to...

You're right though, they can be quite blind about Trek, they aren't bad if you talk about other stuff (just not on the main boards, that's a death sentence).

Question RE: trekkies not what i thought
It goes:

1. The Next Generation.
2. Deep Space Nine.
3. Everything else.

What exactly is the "point" of startrek, as you understand it?

FYI: For my nerd "cred", I got the "A Stitch in Time" book, written by the actor who played Garak, which is about the character Garak.

I have to admire J. J. Abrams for that spectacular film.

example of why they're such fucktards?

Not all of us associate with such people.

I don't talk gay, I don't walk gay, it's like people don't even know I'm gay unless I'm blowing them.

RE: trekkies not what i thought
I love nerds. We assume a decent science education and technological savy, but then give each other +5 nerd cred for possession of particular items or a serious -20 for missing an oblique reference. Excuse me while I check my bag of holding for all Star Trek merchandise and a trail food. Tongue

there are many themes(sp?) in trek but the most obvious to me is tolerance. the problem ive noticed on that star trek board is that many of the posters are very intolerant. not to mention that there are alot of bible thumpers.. that makes no sence to me.
oh and it goes
1. star trek(including the animated series)
2. tng
3.enterprise
the other two are mostly crap!

Yo Druid, it appears you've been hangin' with the wrong fools. Come hang
with us, there are a lot of trekkies here, but we are not Nazi
trekkies. For example, some of the trekkies here are so bad, they think
that Star Trek is written "Star Treck". So there, we won't kill you if
you have your opinion about the series.

It's all entertainment. I like Chris Pine's Kirk. I think he nails it. I love these new films.

Druid: If you put enterprise above DS9, you can't expect tolerance in reply. That's just basic.

Give me your argument in the form of a published paper, and then we can start to talk.
