our house is too quiet this morning.....and that odd panic is missing.

When I want your opinion I'll read your entrails.

RE: very old dog
I found piles of dog hair hiding everywhere in the house for years afterwards.... Kinda makes you sad, and smile at the same time...

I still find the occasional tennis ball out in the orchard after several years. Still gives me a jolt.

RE: very old dog
So sorry you have to go through this. Dogs should never die. They're way more humane than humans are.

Life gets back to "normal". It's just a "new normal". Hang in there.

We lasted a week without a dog. Then we got one from the pound. She needed us and I guess we needed her. Then a few months later we got her a friend. She needed us too. They're not replacement for our last dog. They're just the "new normal". She's been the new normal for 13 years now and we're closer to "old dog" than I'd like to be. We've gave her a great 13 years.

Let us know when you reach new normal.

is there anything harder than saying goodbye to an old dog who's loved you so?

The inability to communicate directly makes it extra hard. So so sorry. While time will do its work, we never want to lose that special feeling. Its a beautiful love.

We went to the store; puddled up at all of Mocha's favorite things and all the foods we tried while she was so sick..... then we went and got a puppy.

I know.... it's not really right. Lots of friends disagreed. But we did it anyway. Mocha would not want this home sad. But busy instead.

We're busy alright.

Of course, we will be needing pictures!

RE: very old dog
As always, I'm late to the party.

I lost my soul mutt last April. I still can't think about her without tearing up. So, like others here, I get it and I'm very sorry for your loss.

We like having two dogs and we rescued a 2nd one in June. It helped. And, we started working with a local rescue last spring and we foster dogs now. That helps too. But, I will always miss Blue. We have a new dog, not a replacement.

Hope you and the family are starting to feel better and enjoying the puppy.
