Many years ago I had a girlfriend who was a born again charismatic Christian. She spoke nothing but gibberish and also spoke in tongues. Needless to say the relationship did not last very long.

For years... I've never asked. I just ignored it. But, I'm going to.

Kunoxian Drive, why can't you spell, and why do you type in such clustered, horrible grammar?

I mean, is there a legit issue here? Is English not your first language? I'm genuinely curious.

My guess is that he/she is posting from a phone, where it's easy to make errors and hard to correct them. At least I hope that's the explanation.

One can be due to stress, language condition, brain damage, or stroke. The other is like a meditative chant, except you're supposed to mentally zone out into la la land, pretend you're speaking a special language, troll the skeptics around you to get odd looks, and/or lower your stress level.

RE: whats the difference between speaking tongues and geberish
There is a technical difference between speaking in tongues and gibberish. Someone said intent. That's true. But output is also key.

Gibberish is not language and doesn't pretend to be.

Speaking in tongues is not language and pretends to be.

It's the difference betweet skiddly boop bop a dulah ramalama ding dong VS. shenola qualeh verado semalashi toya. Endo somey renasato enala valdo res.

Can you tell for certain that the second example is not a language? Not without a little bit of work, especially if you're not dealing with our alphabet. How do YOU know it's not some obsolete dialect that was spoken in pre-Colombian Peru? You don't. Speaking in tongues has some phonemic structure. Gibberish does not. Doesn't pretend to.

I apologize. I should have cited a source for the claims I made.

William Samarin, the linguist whose work on glossolalia (speaking in tongues) is still the gold standard in the field.
