why is male suicide going up?
I miss our little talks so here is one. Why is male suicide raising?I mean it has always been an up and down thing but since 2010,the rates of suicide in men has gone up. I belive in the U.K it is the most common cause of death for young men. There are many reasons but I think the pattern I hear is that men aren't listened too and that the way we try to help men doesn't work(i.e trying to talk about feelings). But of course I want to see what ya'll think.

Actually I thought suicide was rising for women, not men.

Maybe it is raising for women, but it is still much lower for men.

I thought old folks took the prize in suicide frequency:

Quote:In 2014, the highest suicide rate (19.3) was among people 85 years or older. The second highest rate (19.2) occurred in those between 45 and 64 years of age. Younger groups have had consistently lower suicide rates than middle-aged and older adults. In 2014, adolescents and young adults aged 15 to 24 had a suicide rate of 11.6.

Economy, if your country is doing what America is, then they are cutting programs to fund tax breaks for the rich, and if pay isn't keeping up with the cost of living, that causes all sorts of stress for both men and women.

Maybe in the U.S, but as I said it has become the leading cause of death in young males in the U.K

Still either way, both are terrible.

I don't think elder suicide is terrible. When you can count the years you have left on your fingers, and you are going to spend these years in the daily struggle with a failing body or mind, suicide is a very rational option. It has nothing to do with depression and everything with concluding a life well lived on a humane and decent note.

Young males - that's another story.

I think suicide is bad, but I can understand your point.

RE: why is male suicide going up?
In Australia male suicide is at epidemic levels. this is from an old study, 6 years old in fact. I read lately this level has risen.

Men’s suicide statistics

Close to 80 per cent of all suicides in Australia are men (1,816 of 2,361 in 2010) and it is the cause of death with the highest gender disparity (333 male deaths for every 100 female deaths according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2012). Suicide is the number one killer of men under 44 years, with the highest death rate for males in 2010 observed in the 35 to 49 years age group (approximately 27.5 per 100,000). The next closest age group is 75 to 84 year old men (25.8 per 100,000). Although suicide of men in the 15 to 24 years age group occurs at a lower rate (13.4 per 100,000) it accounts for close to one quarter of all male deaths in this age bracket. Suicide ranks second to coronary heart disease in its contribution to potential years of life lost by Australian males (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2010).

RE: why is male suicide going up?
Suicide rate in the US is absolutely rising. In 2014 the suicide rate was the highest it had been in 28 years (of which out of every 10 suicides, 7 were white men.) And it is a fact the suicide has always occured exponentialy higher in males. In 2005, in the US there were 25848 male suicides. There were 6711 female suicides that same year, for comparison.
